Review: School of Witchcraft & Wizardry @ Enigma Quests

Based in the heart of London, something magical is happening at Enigma Quests. Putting a twist on the increasingly popular ‘locked room’ genre, their themed rooms promise an ‘experience you will never forget’. And indeed, we were not disappointed. It was my first experience of a ‘locked room’ and I can confidently say it won’t be my last, particularly considering that they’ve got a new Ocean’s Eleven style one coming soon…

It was my friends’ birthday and being massive Potterheads that we are, we’d booked their School of Witchcraft and Wizardry game. It’s themed loosely on the Harry Potter series and your team is taking their final exams before graduation, in subjects including Potions, Ancient Runes and Defence Against the Dark Arts. Your objective is to pass your exams by solving tasks, riddles and puzzles, moving from room to room. But time is against you and you only have an hour to solve everything (though you can always ask for a bit of help if you get stuck).

The tasks themselves are logical and the theme ties everything together, creating a sense of an overall narrative which I felt was lacking at my previous venture into the immersive genre. The set dressing is particularly impressive with no detail spared to recreate this world (without any copyright infringement, I imagine). Potions, dungeons, robes (I chose Ravenclaw…duh)! And the final room was an impressive ending; while we’d guessed what would be in it, I was still genuinely a little scared at the size of ‘it’.

In the end, we graduated with five minutes to spare and achieved an ‘O’ for Outstanding, the best you can get. My number one tip: ask for help of you need it. On quite a few occasions we were being a tad dim, not noticing things which had been activated, solving the puzzle but not in quite the correct way. Kudos to our taskmaster for his patience! And one other tip: enjoy yourself! Enigma Quest have created quite the experience here, so don’t speed through it, savour it.

Verdict: an ‘experience you will never forget’ indeed- I can’t wait to go back!
